Shaker panelling along a loft bedroom wall
A loft bedroom with one long plain wall under a dado rail. I set it out in my Workshop Tools app first: six panels across a 4105 mm wall, 1000 mm high, in 69 mm MDF battens. The grid sits on the skirting and runs up under the dado rail, and at the end where the roof comes down the top rail turns and follows the slope. The battens are left bare, ready for the decorator.

The panelling in 3D
The wall drawn in 3D to the real sizes from my Workshop Tools app: 4105 mm wide, 1000 mm high, 69 mm battens and six openings of 603.7 x 862. The batten thickness, the skirting and the angle of the slope are standard sizes, taken from the photos. Turn it, or take it apart to see the battens on their own.

How it went together

01
A plain wall under a dado rail
The long wall of a loft bedroom: painted plaster under a dado rail, with the roof sloping down at the right hand end by the roof window.

02
Set out in my app
I put the wall into the batten grid in my free Workshop Tools app: 4105 mm wide, 1000 mm high, 69 mm battens, six panels across. It gave openings of 603.7 x 862, where each upright goes, and seven 2440 lengths to buy.

03
Battens cut
Two rails run the whole width, joined over an upright, and seven uprights at 862 mm fit between them. All cut from MDF strips.

04
Set up in the room
Room ready: the mitre saw set up and the battens laid out on the floor.

05
Cut to the slope
At the far end the roof comes down into the wall, so the top rail turns and runs along the slope, and the last upright is cut short to meet it.

06
Ready for the decorator
The grid sits on the skirting and finishes under the old dado rail. The battens are left bare, ready for the decorator.

I panel walls across London. Send me your sizes and I'll quote, free.
Measure the wall at the top and at the bottom: it’s rarely the same. The sums are for a flat, square wall; a slope or a step is cut to fit on site.

What customers say
From my Google Business Profile.
“Raf has created bespoke cabinetry and panelling for us in our kitchen, living room and bedroom as well as some additional smaller pieces. Everything has been done to a very high standard and we couldn't recommend him more highly!”
Yasmin“We were really impressed by the quality of the work Raf did. Also with his punctuality. He designed and installed our fitted wardrobes to a quality that he would have done in his own house I think. Really cared about the outcome. We feel so lucky to have found a carpenter like him in London.”
Marjan“Raf helped us with a bespoke floor to ceiling bookshelf for our first floor landing. He gave us his time to discuss how it would be built and more importantly how he would get it into our house and up to the first floor. He built the bookcase exactly to our specification and design. … The result is a bookcase that fits the space perfectly. We are very pleased with the quality and workmanship of Raf's work.”
