Two birch ply wardrobes either side of a passage
Two wardrobes either side of the short passage to a door: one with three doors, one with two. The side panels and doors are 18 mm birch ply finished with Osmo oil, and the boxes inside are Sandy Birch melamine, close enough in colour that the whole thing reads as one wood. Each stands on its own timber base, and the wall side was fitted tight by cutting back the skirting.

The wardrobes in 3D
Both wardrobes drawn in 3D facing each other across the passage, with the same insides as the real ones. Nothing was measured for the page, so the sizes are standard: 1500 and 1200 mm wide, 2400 mm high and 600 mm deep. Open the doors, or take them apart.

How it went together

01
Two empty corners
A wide landing in Stoke Newington, with a corner each side of the short passage to a door. The plan was a wardrobe in each, facing each other across the passage.

02
Bases first
Each wardrobe stands on its own timber base, set out on the floor and levelled first, so the boxes go on something flat and true whatever the floor is doing.

03
Boxes in Sandy Birch
The boxes are made from Sandy Birch melamine board, which is very close in colour to birch ply, so the inside matches the outside. They were built on the floor, then stood up.

04
Stood up on the bases
Each box is stood up and slid back onto its base, against the wall.

05
Birch ply outside
The outer shell is 18 mm birch ply: the side panels and the doors. The birch ply is finished with Osmo oil, which keeps it looking like raw wood.

06
Tight against the wall
The tricky part was the side panel on the wall side. It was very tight, so the skirting came off along that wall, was cut back, and went back on so the panel fits neatly.

07
Inside
The three-door wardrobe has a tall run of shelves behind one door and hanging with shelves under it behind the other two. The two-door wardrobe has a top shelf, a hanging rail and low shelves.

08
Handles on
Soft close hinges on every door, and long dark bar handles to finish.

What customers say
From my Google Business Profile.
“We were really impressed by the quality of the work Raf did. Also with his punctuality. He designed and installed our fitted wardrobes to a quality that he would have done in his own house I think. Really cared about the outcome. We feel so lucky to have found a carpenter like him in London.”
Marjan“Raf helped us with a bespoke floor to ceiling bookshelf for our first floor landing. He gave us his time to discuss how it would be built and more importantly how he would get it into our house and up to the first floor. He built the bookcase exactly to our specification and design. … The result is a bookcase that fits the space perfectly. We are very pleased with the quality and workmanship of Raf's work.”
Souad“Raf has created bespoke cabinetry and panelling for us in our kitchen, living room and bedroom as well as some additional smaller pieces. Everything has been done to a very high standard and we couldn't recommend him more highly!”
